Lovely Lucerne

Lucerne is like a living postcard! You could wander the city streets for hours…and we did!

The Kapellbrücke or Chapel Bridge as it is known as, is a covered wooden bridge spanning diagonally in the city. The bridge contains a number of interior paintings dating back to the 17th century, although many of them were destroyed by a fire in 1993 along with a larger part of the wooden bridge. We were told that even restored, the Kapellbrücke is the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe which is pretty special.
The Lion Monument, or the Lion of Lucerne, is a rock relief commemorating the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution. The expression on his face was so life-like that you truly feel his emotion.
Old Swiss House is not to be missed. This eclectic restaurant dates back to 1858!
Our obsession with this ivy covered building was REAL!
Actually all of the buildings were so special with paintings and unique architecture.
Case in point. WoW!!!
I just CAN’T stop!!!

Chocolate

The Swiss are great at EVERYTHING….seriously, everything, but our family considers their greatest contribution to society their extraordinary CHOCOLATE!! We conducted a lot of research on the matter. (and yes, we had some shipped home as well-I’m not ashamed.)

Enjoying their spoils!

Stadtkeller Restaurant

We knew we wanted the kids to experience traditional Switzerland and we weren’t sure how to make that happen in the brief time that we’d be in Lucerne. The Stadtkeller Restaurant was the perfect blend of delicious food, traditional entertainment, comedy and out right fun!

If you can believe it, once our dinner was complete we went to walk back to our hotel and sure enough it was POURING down rain. The restaurant was so incredibly kind to offer us an umbrella which we promptly returned the next day. I can’t say enough about the staff and our experience!

Side Note: On our run home in the rain, we had to take cover a few times in doorways it was just SO BAD and ironically enough we saw a patient of Dr. D’s. It was incredible…halfway around the world we saw someone from our town of 15,000 people. Life is always an adventure!

We were on the side of the stage which was PERFECT!
Dr. D finally gets his stein!
Be jealous! It was AMAZING!
The alpine horns were just one of MANY traditional Swiss instruments played.
Teen’s got some lungs. Everyone was surprised.
Dr. D did pretty great too!
Ricola for their efforts.

More food…More beauty…More Swiss Beer

Our favorite memories are of sitting riverside and enjoying some amazing Swiss food. You just can’t beat these quite moments as a family sitting back and taking it all in.

Mt. Titlis

When in Switzerland, it’s almost sacrilege to NOT head to the mountains, so this trip we hopped a train to Engelberg to enjoy Mt. Titlis, who’s summit is 3,000 meters. Luckily I’d researched enough in advance to know that it gets CROWDED. That was an understatement. While we had an AMAZING experience, we were over the pushing and shoving of the tourists on top of the mountain and left by early afternoon. It really dampened the experience, but fortunately we had already seen and done everything atop the mountain we wanted to do, so we enjoyed hiking and exploring other areas.

The gondola TITLIS Xpress leads up to the intermediate station on the first level then you hop the Rotair straight to the top.
TITLIS Rotair, the World’s first revolving aerial cableway, continues all the way to the top.
Our Rotair engineer.
Cliff Walk-Europe’s highest suspension bridge.
Sledding down a part of the mountain was SO fun! It didn’t look safe-like we’d slide right off the side, but that didn’t stop us. (covering my eyes)
Riding the Ice Flyer was such a fun experience!
Glacier Ice Cave
No editing here…This is just the true splendor we experienced on our hike!
Such a beautiful walk back to Engelberg.
Waiting for our train, we grabbed some snacks and smoothies and met some locals. This is another highlight experience, talking with everyone we meet along the way.
A TRUE Bernese Mountain Dog, down from his mountain home to enjoy a little snack with his owner.
